There’s a leak
in the ceiling of the living room
and the water’s puddling
in the same place as before.
The repairman is coming back
to try and stop the leak
but before he gets here
I hope the ceiling opens up
and the water pours out
in beautiful, shining streams
that lifts the couch off the floor
and carries all the things away.
The remote control for the TV,
the beauty magazines, and
the junk from the grocery store end caps,
all washed away
in a beautiful flood.
We never find most of it again,
and while we seem upset,
I think we’ll secretly be
relieved to be rid of all of it.
Even God loves a flood, after all.
And for a moment, our world
will be wet, and empty,
and full of possibilities again.
