It is Monday morning
(or it will be soon enough)
and I am going to
let you in
on a secret.
It is the best kind of secret:
It’s the kind of secret that everyone knows
but no-one says.
That makes it a very good secret
(by the standards of secrets, that is).
It’s a secret that keeps itself.
And it is this:
At some point today
you’re going to climb into your car
or onto a train
or atop your bike.
And while you’re there,
you’re going to move forward into the world,
surrounded by beautiful people
with immaculate hair
and perfect smiles
who are moving as if they’re in a movie
and just waiting for their next scene to begin.
Your hair will be a little bit messy.
You’re running fifteen minutes late.
Maybe the shirt you wanted to wear
wasn’t clean this morning
and maybe you’re in a bad mood.
Or, maybe worst of all,
your hair is perfect and so is your smile
and you fit in perfectly with everyone else
this Monday morning.
But I am an unauthorized representative
of the perfect Monday people.
And I am going to make sure you’re
on the same page as the rest of us.
The large majority of us woke up this morning
combed our hair
brushed our teeth
and thought, even if just for a second:
Oh God.
Nobody said this would be so difficult.
I thought this got easier.
Why isn’t this easier?
This is easy for everyone else.
Why can’t I get my shit together?
And whether or not
that thought
stayed for just a split second
or for several splitting seconds,
we all still had it.
So it’s worth remembering
as you look around you this morning
that we’re all drowning together
but everyone’s head still seems to be above water
so there’s no reason why yours won’t stay
above water too.
