Austin Loves Pokémon

Actually all Pokémon are the best Pokémon but these ones are extra best in my opinion

#59 - Arcanine
Pokémon Red and Blue, 1998

Literally the goodest of boys, Arcanine is an enormous fire dog who equally wants to cuddle and wreck shit. Inspired by ancient Chinese depictions of lions and also just some big old dogs, Arcanine is one of the few Pokémon who is still technically taller than adult me. Arcanine debuted in Pokémon Red back in 1998, and since I owned Pokémon Blue, I had to trade with my friend Sam in order to get Growlithe (Arcanine’s pre-evolution). Sam dragged his feet, but in the end, it was totally worth it, and my love affair with this chonker of a doggo began.

#150 - MEWTWO
Pokémon Red and Blue, 1998

Mewtwo is Mr. Angry, and also psychic, so that makes him pretty rad. Grown in a lab by scientists trying to clone Mew (who we’ll talk about in a second), Mewtwo was the first Pokémon to have an existential crisis, which he took out on the rest of the world by breaking a bunch of shit and then hiding in a cave in order to grumble about how much everything sucks. Mewtwo added a layer of pathos and introspection to what was otherwise a relatively straightforward story of friendship and personal achievement, and the moral complexity of Mewtwo has informed lots of other decisions within the universe since that time. Also, he’s an angry cat man with a bad attitude, what more do you need out of this?

#151 - MEW
Pokémon Red and Blue, 1998

If Mewtwo posed a question, Mew provided the answer. The DNA from which Mewtwo was made, Mew answers the question of ‘what does it mean to be alive’ by… well, simply existing. He’s the only Pokémon in the entire series who can learn literally any move and, in essence, become literally anything for your team. Mewtwo doesn’t know what to do with his life, and Mew says, do whatever the hell you want because life’s goofy and fun and cute and maybe you shouldn’t take it super seriously. But legit, Mew is hella cute and bubbly and fun and so duh, obviously Mew is here.

Pokémon Red and Blue, 1998

Dragonite is such a fun surprise at the end of Pokémon Red and Blue. Dragonite is the final of three Pokémon — Dratini, a super cute little blue serpent, and Dragonair, an elegant, blue serpent with tiny wings. So what does this elegant, blue dragon turn into? This big, yellowish-orange derpy thing with a pot belly. Sure, Dragonite is a powerful and awesome Pokémon, but it tickles me to no end that the cool, stylish serpents turn into this lumbering doofy thing. Huge fan.
